Travel down winding rivers through mangrove islands on your 45 minute
trip to the manatee site. These mammals are found just outside of Belize
City at the mangrove Island of Swallow Caye. Swallow
Caye is the home for a fair amount of the manatees, so chances of seeing
the manatee is almost 100 percent. These gentle creatures are usually
found feeding or playing in a deep murky hole behind the island. You must
have patience with these animals for sometimes they are inside the creeks
leading into the mangrove, so it can take a little time before we see
them. The population of manatees at this spot is believed to be about
eighteen, adults and calves. Running you engine is not allowed in this
area. It is a protected area and a natural habitat. These mammals are
an endangered species and are protected by the Government of Belize.Your
guide uses a pole to slowly follow the manatee to get close for pictures.
Manatees are curious animals
and most of the times they come right next to the boat good for excellent
close up pictures. Manatees are also called sea cows and long ago were
once believed, by sailors, to be mermaids. Your guide at the manatee site
explains all the life of the manatees to you. We spend about one hour
at this site before heading out to Goff's Caye for lunch and some snorkeling.
For more information on Goff's Caye check Camping Goff's
Caye. After leaving Goff's Caye we head back to Caye Caulker for some
great snorkeling at Shark-Ray Village. If we
are lucky we can get a chance to see dolphins on this tour. Keep your
fingers crossed.
